Poppins Book Nook ~ Folk Tales

Welcome back to Poppins Book Nook; this months theme is Folk Tales. This one gave us pause; we had to think on this one a bit to find a good one. Something different. After mulling about for some time, perusing the book store and even Amazon, we settled on: Paul Bunyan (On My Own Folklore) by Stephen Krensky.

For those who do not recall, we looked this up ourselves, my son asked and I went…”ummmm…”  A folktale is defined as being:

“….a type of traditional story that tries to explain something, or which is meant to help people behave well in the world. Such stories usually are fiction-based with magical or supernatural elements, and they often are woven around talking animals, royalty, peasants or mythical creatures. Initially passed down through oral tradition, they were a major means of educating and entertaining prior to the development of printed materials and modern technologies, and they remain instrumental in preserving aspects of the culture in which they develop.”

Enchanted Learning has a FREE printable on their site, and more information on Folk Tales too, to go along with this month’s readings. Check it out 🙂

There is also a wonderful collection shared by Blessed Beyond a Doubt of 70 Folktales and Fables from Around the World. So you can keep on reading.

And one of my new favorites, we stumbled across this, just today actually, as I was looking up some readings for my son. We plan to print these and put them in a binder as we can: American Folklore, and so much more. ❤

So as I was saying we read about Paul Bunyan and his blue ox, Babe. Who doesn’t love Babe? I know my kiddos have a new love of oxen after reading this. WE spent a bit of time playing some games related to the story, like Flapjack Frenzy and we found this amazing printable pattern for making a Paul Bunyan Puppet Theatre show.

We also found a wonderful treasure of worksheets, from comprehension, to other stories we were able to download or listen to online at Readings A-Z.  We watched some videos on lumberjacks too. My 4 year old son was just amazed by this one:

I think he wants to be a lumberjack when he grows up now; I do know that he cannot wait to try some of this out himself one day! yikes. Even I had no idea about some of this; the things these guys do ~ Its amazing!

So we had such fun – in so many ways- covering so many different things too! We learned about griddles and made pancakes on our own! SInce Paul Bunyan was extremely tall (sixty-three axe handles high!) and very strong, we learned about different weights and measurements; measured some things here and there.  My boys tried to build a tower of megabloks as high as Mr Bunyan himself…… And when Paul found that blue ox naming him Babe; a lesson in friendship indeed. The story comes at a time when America needed wood for houses and towns, land cleared for crops; there is much history told within this tale of Paul and Babe’s larger-than-life adventures. And all adventures that little boys just love to read about and then imagine and act out!

Next month its all about The Great Outdoors so don’t forget to stop on by next month too for all new great reads!
