Titus 2:4-5 (KJV) That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
Does anyone else see that one? Older women (does that include me???) , they are to teach the young women to be sober. Teach them to be keepers at home. to love and to be good. Did you know that the English phrase “love their husbands” is one Greek word “PHILANDROS?” The word literally means “husband lovers.” PHILANDROS was a common word used on grave stones and in epitaphs. The first part of the Greek word comes from PHILEO which refers to a love that has much emotion. So the verse tells Christian women to love their husbands with emotion, to like their husbands and to care for them. The wife’s first priority is her husband, and not her children. She is to submit to him (Eph. 5:22-24). God also calls a wife to be a worker at home, clearly this passage speaks to the importance and value of the home and that it is to be the wife’s primary responsibility.
I really struggled with the idea of being a stay at home mom in the beginning. As a woman with a successful career; one raised to be strong and independent, coming into the church was such a struggle for me. In this area. To give up all my education and my career; to be at home cooking and cleaning and raising my children. I admit, I looked down on it as something that women do who aren’t skilled or educated ~ shame on me right ~ But being born again, being washed in the water and filled with the Holy Ghost – that new man we are to put on? It changed me; like turning on a light switch. Suddenly it all made so much sense. And today we are home educators; we teach and cook and clean, we keep the home a place that has Jesus at the center of it all. We read together; we study His word and pray. In every moment, we speak of Him, we teach His way – walking together as a family. What could be better? And this has become such a passion of mine – there is a desire I have to train and teach others – to testify to mommas everywhere – come home. Bring your children home. Lift Him up in an even greater way; walk in faith as never before. It’s such a blessing really. To be there for every moment; talk about teaching young women how to love and do good.
Jesus, I pray today that you will send those who are in need; who are seeking a better way. Lord those old paths, let others see the great value that comes from walking them. Lord help all those ladies out there who desire to be keepers of their homes; trainers of their children ~ Help them, help all of us to remember and to know, ALL things are possible with you at our side. If there be any that desire to learn, to be taught, send them Lord, that I may be as you, feeding them and guiding them in your great way. In Jesus precious name!
