Creating a Masterpiece {Review}

I have three children who ALL love to draw. While I do teach art classes, very part-time, I do not feel as though my skills are what they are looking to learn. Their abilities are beyond my own. That said, I was beyond thrilled to receive a one year subscription to the Drawing Program from Creating a Masterpiece. This includes three different levels so that any level of artist can benefit from the lessons. We have used some of their online lessons in the past and they have always been a huge hit with my oldest son. This time around my younger ones dove in too!

Art has always been something I have put a great deal of importance upon in our home. There are so many ways (and topics) our children can learn as they draw. I think of the value of creativity, the patience that is required for those kids who need to get something just right. Whether we see it or not, there is math, some science and history, perhaps geography and more – We just have to take a step back so we can see all that is being gained from our kids having time to sit and draw.

In these videos, master artist Sharon Hofer guides our children though 30 different drawing projects with a total of 48 lessons. These range from charcoal, to colored pencils, and a variety of other materials. Subjects range from animals to landscapes, still life and more. The variety of lessons available means that there is something for each child in your house to enjoy. Not only are they amazing to draw, but because they are online videos, you can go as quickly as you like. For younger ones, it is so nice that they can pause and go back as much as they need. No need to hurry.

There is some great teaching that is wrapped up into these classes (its not just art). My kids favorite tidbits were:

  • It would “only” take you 3 years and 2 months to make the journey to the outer rings of Saturn
  • Polar Bears actually live in the Artic Circle; they can weight up to 990lbs (Imagine that snuggling up on your lap)
  • Ostriches can run fast – over 40 miles per hour – Whoa!
  • Always start small to ensure you can complete the project you started .
  • Use your pencil on the side, to shade objects

My daughter (who is 8) loved trying her hand at The Rose (which was a level three lesson) and The First Thanksgiving (this is level one), while my boys (they are 10 and 14) loved learning how to draw a duck (level two) and a turtle (level one) too! My oldest also enjoyed Dreaming in Africa, Orbiting Saturn, Tabby Cat – there are just so many lessons to chooses from! And each one has a plethora of things we can learn about as we draw the subject at hand. I always love when that happens!

Before each lesson she lists what materials are needed; this will include type of pencil or paper to be used. There is also a section of Helpful Hints – I appreciated reading many of these myself. As I think i mentioned before, last spring I began teaching art classes in a few local elementary schools, so many of these hints make so much sense to me (some I even have said to my students). We mommas may not always appreciate the importance of good quality paper and pencils, but it really does make a difference and it is a constant reminder that Miss Sharon makes in her lessons.

As we have experienced every time we have used lessons from Creating a Masterpiece, I have seen my children really grow and get inspired as they create. There is so much value in art; so many ways in which it really helps our children to develop. As we draw we learn about the world around us – Alaskan wilderness, you can get into outer space, the prairie, Africa – The places you can go and the things you can know are endless with all of the amazing artwork for our children to learn from.

If you would like to see more about all that this program has to offer, please do stop by some of the reviews other Crew members have written to see how they enjoyed this program and the masterpieces that they created.
