Illuminated Bible (A Review)

I love my Bible!

I also admit I am very much a KJV kind of girl.

With the limited time I have for reading and study (four kids makes it more challenging right?) I try to be wise in how I spend my time.

Yet I admit, I have a bit of an addiction to pretty books. And when I saw The ESV Illuminated Bible- it is just amazing, beautiful, regal….

I had to check it out more for myself.
It is truly a masterpiece. Beauty on every page!

Some of the amazing features of this one are:

  • 9-point, Lexicon
  • Black letter text
  • 2-color printing
  • 64 full-page, custom book opener illustrations
  • 50 full-page verse illustrations
  • 250+ hand-lettered margin verses
  • 100+ other illustrations throughout
  • Illustrated by Dana Tanamachi, whose work has been featured by Google, The Wall Street Journal, Random House, USPS, and Target
  • Thick, cream-colored paper
  • Wide margins
  • Single-column, paragraph format
  • Smyth-sewn binding
  • Packaging: Permanent Slipcase

Is this not truly a work of art? I absolutely love spending time in the Word of God – I find nothing to be more beautiful, powerful or precious than His word. This Bible – while I admit I do wish it was in King James Version – it is such a joy to spend time in. It is quite an inspiration too to my oldest son who loves the Word and loves all things artsy … Since he has dabbled a bit in journalling and hand lettering, this was something he really got inspired by!

For anyone who is in need of a Bible, or looking for a special gift for a loved one, this may be just what you are looking for. Personally I do not think I could ever mark it up because the pages are just so lovely. The soft paper, creamy coloring, the lovely illustrations throughout. This is one of those Bibles that I am happy to have as an addition to my little library. I don’t know that this would take the place of my Geneva Bible when it comes to study, but I certainly will enjoy reading this now and again with my children. And my oldest son (probably my little ones too as they get bigger) will take joy in the idea and process of Bible art journalling themselves.

Ironically the concept of illuminated manuscripts is also a rather historical thing (going back to medieval times); the word “manuscript” from the Latin words manus (hand) and scriptus (writing) literally means “written by hand.” And the word “illuminated,” from the Latin illuminare, means “lighted up.” For a book to truly be illuminated, it had to be decorated with gold. (typically applied to the pages in thin sheets called gold leaf). These were made continually until around 1450, when Johannes Gutenberg invented the movable type, printing press, making mass production of books possible. Is that amazing or what? I love when there is a lesson like this within something like this!

This truly is gorgeous! The detail throughout this book, you could spend hours enjoying and studying. There is also plenty of room for anyone who desires to do so to add their very own art. I don’t know that I could possibly make even a tiny mark in this Bible myself. It is just so perfect, so lovely – but if you are one of those truly creative types, I am sure you will be inspired and enjoy adding your own personal touch to this one.

Night, Night Farm ~ FlyBy Promotions Review

We love books. My little girls (18 months and 5 years old) love to snuggle up and read a good book with momma.
So I was so excited to have the chance to review a copy of  Night, Night Farm

We have had this one in our house for awhile now and it has been a huge hit from the moment it arrived. It’s a traveling companion as we are out and about.

Its a favorite read for sure; we enjoy it at bedtime, even during the daytime hours! 🙂

Between teaching on thankfulness and on farm animals, there is so much we enjoy about this book.

This is a super sweet and very colorful book; the story is so simple and yet so powerful.

As we read, we see each little one, from the kittens to the cows, thanking God for those little things that are a part of our every day.

How often do we forget to thank God for those little things? Apples and good dreams (my daughter prays for good dreams every night now) and for momma and daddy; warm beds and baths and the moon….

This is a wonderful little board book; a soft padded cover and so many bright colors and images to see! Very eye catching  ~ this is one I would grab for a closer at the bookstore…  Just to see more  The illustrations are done by Virginia Allyn and they are so amazing.

We have solutely adore this book! If we paid at the beautiful illustrations. And every page is such a sweet words. And let’s not forget the important lesson with in this little book. Let us thank the Lord for every little thing. Especially little ones.

Motivate Your Child Action Plan ~ Review

Dr. Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller are the founders of the National Center for Biblical Parenting. The NCBP’s mission is to Parent the Heart of the child.  National Center for Biblical Parenting also covers topics like: ADHD, Anger, Defiance, Sexuality, Conflict and lots more!  Previously I had been blessed with being a part of the launch team for the book Motivate Your Child. You can read my review here.  This was just what I needed for my oldest son. And so, when I had the opportunity to review the Motivate Your Child Action Plan by Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller, I knew that this was exactly what I needed to go back and review all I had learned. It was time, and now I had no excuse, to put sso many of the things I learned in their earlier book, into action.

Motivate Your Child Action Plan consists of 12 chapter, consier it as a 40 day plan, to help you identify specific character issues that your children struggle with and then, to come up with an action plan. As you move forwad, you build a strength into your child from those very things that have been such a thorn in your side (and theirs too).  With the book you will also receive a link to 12 audio sessions you can download that have Turansky and Miller explaining and exploring, even deeper,  the concepts in each chapter of this book.  I think of this as a way of having my own “mentor” walking alongside me while I read and pray on the plan for our family.

Some of the topics within this book you will go over are:

  • Seeing change in 40 days – Its all about a good, firm foundation (theology) and then a consistent strategy/technique
  • Determining where you want to go – Identify the problem – envision the solution.  This is a time of truth. Make your list of the area(s) that need growth; define the character trait that goes along with each one. As you go along, celebrate every sign of success big or small!
  • Creating a map to get where you want to go – Don’t focus on where you are but where you want to be. The moment matters.
  • A place for firmness – The caterpillar to a butterfly does require struggles.
  • Vision turns common people into heroes. We cannot simply react to a problem.  Vision focus on the solution.
  • Teaching shows the way – Do they see, do we, that God is at work in our life?  Learn how to apply biblical techniques, teach our children how to do the same.
  • Spiritual energy provides strength
  • Coaching – Encourage you children to figure out those problems. Become part of the solution; forget the rules and start to think strategy.
  • Building motivation from within – Good habits + cultivating a good conscience + building character = desire/motivation needed.
  • Growing together (if we do not change, neither can they!) Kids need discipline to build self-discipline.Its a relationship thing; that relational time is not optional.  We must have it if we want this thing to be successful.

We have really found ourselves struggling with our oldet son as he has gotten older. Yet the wisdom within Motivate Your Child, and the additional Motivate Your Child Action Plan, gives me hope. This really helped to remind me, and focus myself, on the goals for our family and how we can get there. This is truly a blessing; heart parenting truly can help us to raise our children to be inspired and guided towards the great plans God has for them as they discover life.

“Use firmness, visioning, teaching, prayer, & coaching to move your child from where he is today, to where he needs to go.”

Wisdom is a Woman: Exploring the Wisdom of God

I was rather unsure of this one when I had the opportunity to review this book.  The title struck me as unique; I have always enjoyed studying the women of the Bible.  I always seek to learn and grow Biblically as a woman, however this was a surprise, for me.

It was a struggle to read through Wisdom is a Woman,  as I was unable to get past the title and  the content which seemed to be in disagreement with one another. What I expected was a book teaching on Biblical womanhood- perhaps sharing the various contributions of women in the Bible and what I actually read within these pages was more of a discussion of womens’ “issues”.

“Interestingly, the most thorough account of biblical womanhood is found in the final twenty-one verses of the book of Proverbs. These ending verses of chapter 31 appear to be a tribute to a virtuous and capable wife.” (ebook page 123 & 362)

I admit there were moments within that did pique my curiosity such as in the very beginning where I read:

Can you name the apostle Peter’s wife? What do we know of the domestic life of the prophet Isaiah? His wife was a prophetess in her own right, but what was her name? (Heidi Lee. Wisdom is a Woman (Kindle Locations 139-140).)

But I have to admit, its hard to find the words to express my disdain at this book.  I do so love to read and it is so rare that I come across material that almost instantly turns me off but this was truly a difficult rad for me. And I am sad that this is seen as a reference to the bible, while also seeming so disdainful and negative towards many of the Words of God written within.

The Adventures of Pajama Girl and the Coronation of the Cupcake Queen ~ Review

This is the most darling book I have seen in a LONG time! And from the moment it arrived my daughter ( who is 3) has just LOVED it!

A cute, illustrated story about a girl’s imagination and her magical pajamas. In this adventure, Ellie’s cupcake pajamas pave the way for she and her Sis to take a journey to a land filled with all kinds of sweet treats. Their journey quickly turns into an adventure to help the Cupcake Queen find the missing sprinkles needed for her coronation ceremony. In searching for the missing sprinkles, Ellie and Sis uncover a life lesson that is important for every child to learn.

This is only 32 pages; a very fun and easy read. Great for bedtime too (although we have read it at many different times and locations)

pj girl

I myself just love how The Adventures of Pajama Girl and the Coronation of the Cupcake Queen make it simple for my daughter to understand the commandment “Thou Shalt Not Steal”.  It’s very important to me that my children have books that encourage and teach the value of the Word of God and how it applies to every one of us.  This simple story made it so very easy for my daughter to see the trouble that comes from taking things that are not yours. She was so worried when we read that the sprinkles were all gone. Even she knows that without sprinkles, cupcakes are just not as much fun!

This is a wonderful book full of colorful and fun illustrations. Even the cover of the book is pretty with lots of sparkly pink,  and a fun pastel colored illustration.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a little girl (or more)!  What a great story to get ready for bed at night; encourage imagination in our kids, and help to put thoughts of sweet dreams in their heads 🙂 It may cost you a new pair of pajamas or two (be warned! lol)

Ready to Buy It?
Purchase the hardcover, 32 page book, “The Adventures of Pajama Girl and the Coronation of the Cupcake Queen”, at amazon.com for $12.67.

When you buy the book from any store or online and then enter your receipt at http://pajamagirl.com/downloads.php, you’ll receive 10 free Pajama Girl Activity Sheets sent via email!

Growing with Jesus as we Read

We love to read. In fact, as we move forward in our home education I am thrilled to find more and more books that are powerful teaching tools. And have wonderful lessons of faith and integrity; characters of great value – Simple truths!  It is especially fun when we receive these as gifts, for a simple review.  So right now, and many of these are related to the season, and our children – this is what we are reading. 🙂

I was thrilled that Fly By Promotions offered to us for review “Easter Stories – Classic Tales for the Holy Season,” compiled by Miriam LeBlanc. I love to find stories to share with my children that show the true meaning of Christ’s death and resurrection. While we choose to focus on Passover in our home, I do appreciate stories that are able to show us the Holy Week and are well written, high quality, engaging stories for all ages. These stories contain a wonderful combination of suspense and drama, capturing the attention of young listeners from beginning to end.

There are so many great stories that I had never read before that capture the true essence of what we ought to be honoring this time of year. These stories capture the meaning of the sacrifice that Jesus made and the transformational power within the born again experience that we all can share. Many of these stories are told to encourage us to consider how we perceive and treat others, to examine ourselves for that heart of Christ as we show the love and hospitality of Christ himself. As a mother and home educator I want nothing more than for my children to grow up with an understanding of what it truly means to live for Christ and to take up their cross as He did for us.  These are wonderful, historical, inspiring stories ~ Some of the tales retell bible stories like “John,” by Elizabeth Goudge, however most of these are parables and fables that share the Gospel message itself.  The pictures are beautiful black and white woodcuts (I love black and white myself) by Lisa Toth at the beginning of each story.

This 374 page softcover book contains 27 stories from authors such as C.S. Lewis, Leo Tolstoy, Oscar Wilde, Anton Chekhov, Ruth Sawyer, and Selma Lagerlof.  All truly wonderful stories to share and grow by!

HOW DO YOU TEACH YOUR CHILD ABOUT JESUS?

“Jesus Sees Us” Doll and Book!

Our children love the Bible, church, singing and worship ~ It’s all about Jesus, but not being able to see Him, how do we encourage and grow that faith, especially as they get older?
This doll is a great visual aid, and a reminder to ALL of us that Jesus sees.
http://jesusseesus.com
My daughter, who is 3, loved the doll right away.  It’s a soft body but a hard head, a friendly, joy filled face, and arms open wide.  And it comes with a lesson book too 🙂
According to the creators:
The Jesus Sees Us accompanying book is designed to be read with your child. The illustrations and easy-to-read lessons, along with the Jesus Sees Us doll, have the power to ignite your child’s love of Jesus. The book will assist them in their comprehension of who Jesus is and all the amazing things He did while He was on the earth. Children are able to understand the key concepts of the lessons and will amazingly begin using them in their everyday lives.  A child’s ability to learn about Jesus comes in stages. Jesus Sees Us assists your child in taking those first steps by breaking down many of the most important lessons that make up the root of our Christian faith. Each illustrated story introduces Jesus in a relatable way, allowing them to better understand how they can carry out regular everyday tasks that make Jesus smile. The Jesus Sees Us book is illustrated in a way that draws children into the pictures, and therefore, into the lessons. Children learn about God’s love when they learn about Jesus’ actions.
http://jesusseesus.com
We have read and continue to read this one, engaging in conversation (mostly with my older son who is 9 and his brother who is 5)  about how each story relates to our own lives and experiences. This is a great little book to read and growing; as our children get older what a great way for them to see how the Bible is so much more than just a book of stories. No doubt if we are not teaching them how to live this out, there is much that they will miss out on of the Gospel. May we show them what it looks like to live out this powerful faith and how within it too!
Jesus Sees Us is available for purchase:
And right now the creators, Maureen & Kelly, are offering a $10 off promo code to our readers ~JSBlog10~

Holy Days and holidays   ~ It can be confusing for us as adults, so how about for kids? As I said before we partake in the Holy Days rather than the man made holidays but we do feel it is important for our children to understand the history of these days. And I love materials that can help point my children to the Word of God itself that they may grow to be as the Bereans…

Why Easter? and Why Christmas? are written by Barbara Reaoch, and illustrated by Carol McCarty. Both of these books have short and simple daily readings, about twenty-eight in each book. Each reading directs you to the scripture itself, as well as providing a memory verse, and questions for discussion (I especially like this for my oldest son). There is also a song for each week of “study” within the book, another great benefit, since all three of mine love music!

This is so much more than just Bible stories; rather Why Easter? and Why Christmas? consist of a Bible passage, a Bible lesson, discussion questions, a song, and Bible memorization for each day, in small portions ideal for little people!

I believe parents will find Why Easter? and Why Christmas? to be helpful additions to their library, and our children will definitely enjoy the interactive Bible lessons within these books. Why Easter? and Why Christmas? are very well-written, and full of beautiful, yet simple, illustrations. While these are two holidays that we do not partake in ourselves, it is wonderful and refreshing to be able to have materials that we can use with our children that point them to God’s Word itself in every way.

mission

We are all called to be missionaries, to preach the Gospel, where we are which is exactly where God has planned for us.

Not sure how? In A Field Guide For Everyday Missions, there are 30 days and 101 ways to demonstrate the Gospel, right there for you.

From the Back Cover

Surprise-If you call yourself a follower of Jesus, He calls you a missionary!

You may never go halfway around the world, but because of God’s work in you, you are on mission. As everyday missionaries, God has sent us to live out his Great Commission in the ordinary, all-too-busy, and even mundane moments of our lives.

But what exactly does an everyday missionary do?
Where and when does everyday mission happen?
And how can you possibly share the gospel without killing your relationships?

Your reading begins with six different questions: 1 – Who is my everyday mission field? 2 – What does an everyday missionary do? 3 – When does everyday missions happen? 4 – Where does everyday mission happen? 5 – Why should I even care about everyday mission? and 6- How do I share the gospel without killing a relationship?

This book is compiled of six week segments with daily readings and ideas for applying what you read, to your mission field.  If you need a better understanding of what the mission field is, how to be a missionary yourself, this is quite helpful and will give you a new perspective on how you can reach out and help to build the Kingdom of God.  This is such a down to earth, practical book. ILet’s face it, we could all do more and this can help us to take it to the next level and really “live missionally” and “do evangelism”.  After al if theKing of Kings came, not to be served, but to serve, how much more ought we to seek opportunities to serve?

prayer life

Prayer is powerful. It is so often neglected too. We are all so busy; I have felt that way too often myself. I forget, or I do a great disservice to Jesus in my prayers to Him.  You know those kind…the ones that we quickly mumble before we eat, or before we roll out of bed. They are so empty and meaningless – our relationship with Him does not grow because of those prayers. And they stink. There is no sweet fragrance to them going up. So I was curious to read Prayers for Today by Kurt Bjorklund: A Year Long Journey of Contemplative Prayer. Filled with so many quote-able sayings, and prayers there is much to learn within this little book!  Inspirational and encouraging 🙂

This is much like a devotional too. Each day begins with a scripture, which leads into an historical prayer sometimes by a saint, pastor, or even just one unknown from long ago. From intercession to thanksgiving and surrender, renewal and wisdom ~ these are powerful prayers to meditate upon as you grow in your own prayer life.

Can you Discern the voice of God? Let’s face it we live in a day in age where it can be a challenge. Between the busyness of life in general, and all the spirits that are about us, we must be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.  Do you know:

Throughout the Bible we see how He spoke to His people.  To Moses through a burning bush, to Daniel when he endured the lion’s den, to Jonah in the belly of a large fish….the list goes on. Today many wonder where He is today but we are the ones who limit God! Certainly it is most important to ensure that what we hear aligns with the Word itself since God never changes and we know that He cannot lie. His word, it is always true and faithful. May we consider when we hear those voices: Will it bring glory to God? Is it consistent with His truth? Is it confirmed by external circumstances? Do you have a sense of peace, even if the decision is challenging? While there were some times that scripture used, seemed to be, to be rather, made to fit, certainly we are able to wait on the Lord, to be still, and to search as the Bereans, to ensure what we are told lines up with what He says in His Word.

Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God, until that he have mercy upon us.

Going to Boot Camp!

If you know me you know how much I LOVE to camp. Not really. Actually I am terrible when it comes to the great outdoors. I love nature; spending time enjoying God’s creation. Relaxing in the shade maybe with a good book ~ I have three children, one more on the way. My oldest one a very rambunctious, loud, constantly, driving us all nuts kind of boy.  So needless to say when I heard of the Boys Bootcamp, and had the opportunity to attend this one, I was SO excited!

I want to do more than just survive my boys. And I don’t know where you are at in your journey, what struggles you my face, but I do know that I do not understand my boys. Especially my oldest (who is 9).  He cannot focus. He is too focused. He is here and there and everywhere. It’s the very first reason we chose to homeschool him so long ago. It’s a challenge teaching a boy like him; I know I am not alone but I admit to feeling very alone. A lot. I don’t want to seem ungrateful or have a spirit that is grumbling and complaining but how do you teach him when he just cannot hold still? When math is on the table and he cannot stop doodling or bouncing or racing back and forth in the house?

And just the other day someone smiles sweetly at me and says, “You just wait ’til they’re teenagers if you think it’s hard now.”  I admit my heart sunk just a bit.

But  refuse to believe that it has to be this way forever. One day we WILL have fond memories of our time together. And maybe I will look back and laugh a bit over my oldest son, who runs relays through the store when we go out; who has to be loud and in your face, all the time, arguing (he calls it debating) and just being all around out of control.

I mean, with my younger two, I can easily do a trip to the store.  My daughter (3) and my son (5) walk the aisles with me, helping me find things, asking questions and just chatting up a storm. They love to sing worship songs as we are out too 🙂 It’s pleasant and wonderful time spent with these two little ones. But not with my oldest son. With him it is always an emotional roller coaster; I struggle to just try to keep him within social boundaries and by the end of the trip, I am a wreck and he is a mess. But there is a heart in there; one that is so full of joy and love but just doesn’t know how to get in sync.  How to control himself and all of these emotions and ideas bouncing about in his head, a bright young man who has lots of energy and little, to no, ability to manage himself.

Impulsive ~ No off switch on this one.

His impulses would take over.  I know he is a big hearted, good natured kid but how hard it is to remind myself of this when he is constantly pushing everyone’s buttons. And at what point does his inability to control himself become no longer a bi-product of his age? At what point does this not have to do with maturity?

I ask myself and my husband, “Does life have to be more difficult with him forever? Is sullen, moody, rebelliousness just a part of growing up? Do we just have to ride this out and survive these years?”

It simply cannot be. There is more for us, I just know there is a better way!

And so I am packing my bags (haha) and getting ready to head off to Boot Camp 9-12 to:

Get in Shape! Shape up your relationship with your son now before the real challenges hit.

Get Armed! Learn about serious dangers your son will face and develop the weapons to deal with them.

Get a Strategy! Learn how to put together a plan for high school and get it done.

Get Moving!  Start now to prepare your son to pass through the minefields to godly manhood.

Some of the topics that will be discussed are:

Brains Turned to Mush

Temptation Everywhere

Dating and Courtship (not there yet….honestly dreading this one too!)

Homeschooling High School

Jobs & Entrepreneurship

Doing Real Things in the Real World

Becoming Young Adults, not Sullen Teens

Loving these years! (how desperately we need to love these years!)  ❤

The next session will be held April 27, 28, 29 and May 4 and 5.  I for one plan to be delivering our daughter at some point this week. But when you sign up, if you are unable to make any of the live sessions, you can always download any classes you miss. This is great for us too since our schedules are so wacky; plus it allows my husband to listen to the sessions too when he has time.

When I complete this bootcamp there will be an awesome giveaway, care of Hal & Melanie Young: a free download of their book, Raising Real Men in both ebook and audio ebook version. Very gracious indeed!

No More perfect Kids ~ Day 13

“To easily praise God necessitates a thinking pattern of gratitude. Our children need to hear us thank God for creating them the way He did. We need to model acceptance and even joy over them, down to their hard-to-brush hair, tendency to break into song, unending energy, and insatiable curiosity.”   Jill Savage and Dr. Kathy Koch, NO MORE PERFECT KIDS

We are all so very different. Unique; made in His image.

Isn’t that something amazing to consider?

It’s hard to wrap my mind around; the depth of His power and love. Creativity too. 🙂  Each and every one of us “in His image”. Created for a unique and special purpose. Every. One. of. Us.

Sometimes I forget how awesome and precious my children are (I admit it! lol)  Those days when it is all a struggle, nothing seems to go right, it all gets spilled, tracked through the house, messed up and messed down. …

It’s hard to focus on those special, wonderful things. The mess that gets made because of their excitement about something. The joy that causes a cup of milk to fly across the room; simple pleasures in mud pies and hands full of worms. These can all translate into wonderful things: energy, creativity, a desire to learn, love for friends and family, life, joy, gratitude…If we choose to see these things in this way.

I love how it is written:

“Accepting the person He created us to be is a crucial step in helping our children embrace who they are.  As they understand and realize some of the challenges they have, we can demonstrate to them the ways to look at that thing, that crazy hair, their shorter stature, the inner desire to not speak until spoken to, square in the face, understand it is there, and understand that God created them unique and beautiful.  He loves them completely, including that “thing.”

We love them as He loves us. We all have our little quirks. We all have things that we do not like so much about ourselves. Others too.But there is a power that comes from raising our children, knowing, that they are loved. That they are His precious creation. And ours too. We cannot love others if we do not love (and cherish) ourselves The good and the “bad”. Let us help them to learn how to appreciate how they were made and to see opportunity in those things that may not be how they would like them to be.

There is so much for our children to learn. So much for them to face, challenges, struggles, new experiences.. Let us make sure that they know how grateful we are, how blessed we feel, that they are a part of our family. Even on those days that are all a blur, when I am glad to see them off to bed, I have to make sure they know, I love them as they are. Even with that little “thing” that may drive me nuts. 🙂
